Some numbers can be obtained but the Olympic component can’t be determined. For example, Coca Cola and McDonald’s advertised like presidential candidates. They are worldwide Olympic partners, meaning they can attach the Olympic rings on their products.

What’s impossible is to find out how much extra they made because of their Olympic sponsorship. Don’t feel bad if you can’t answer that — no one can with certainty, not even Coca Cola’s accountants.

Then there’s all the TVs that were bought so people could see the Olympics, food for Olympic parties, extra airfare to and from London, hotels and restaurants in and around London, taxes paid by people in London, and so on. Same question: How much was made because of the Olympics and how much would have been made anyway? For hospitality and travel, that’s almost impossible to answer. Look, I understand this is a project that’s supposed to make you do some research.

I think this project is particularly pointless, but never mind my ranting. Meanwhile, look for economic justifications for hosting the Olympics.
